Non-Newtonian Polymers:                    PDM-5055

Promerus’ PDM-5055 solution can adjust the flow                                      properties of polymers.

FeaturesPDM-5055

  • Low cure temperature
  • Shear thinning
  • Thixotropic
  • Tunable viscosity

Overview

Typical polymer solutions are Newtonian fluids—meaning that viscosity is linearly proportional to shear rate.

In the case of PDM-5055, when the shear stress is removed, viscosity increases dramatically. This behavior is known as thixotropy, the property of becoming less viscous when subjected to an applied stress.

Most commonly, thixotropy can be observed in a bottle of ketchup. Ketchup exhibits static conditions at rest. Over time, when shaken or stirred, the solution becomes less viscous.

This same behavior can be applied to thread adhesives, paint and solder pastes for a diverse range of applications. In all cases, when the shear forces are removed, the material has a tendency to stay put.
